Lutz-Land O’Lakes Women’s Club benefits abuse victims

LUTZ — It was the bed pillows that drew Carolyn McKay’s attention to tables filled with children’s clothes, diapers, personal care items, towels and linens.

The family service coordinator for Sunrise Spouse Abuse Center said, “When I saw those pillows ... oh ... everyone should have their own pillow.”

McKay had come to the Lutz-Land O’Lakes Women’s Club’s annual Domestic Violence Luncheon and Benefit to donate items for the center. Representatives of the Salvation Army’s Spousal Abuse Center also received donations from the club’s Aug. 22 event at the Lutz Community Center.

“It blesses us beyond belief,” McKay said, adding many women and children leave with only the clothes they are wearing. “The whole goal is to help them get a safe road in life.”

The club, formed in 1960, has held the event every August for as long as anyone can remember, said club president Rosie Heim.

Club members and guests donate the items for the shelters. They also donate clothes, shoes, purses, household items, books and other merchandise for a boutique and mini-flea market held in conjunction with the luncheon.

“Whatever we sell, we give the money to them (the shelters) too,” Heim said. “And they can go through those items that are left after the sale and see what they can use, too.”

The Aug. 22 sales brought in about $1,000.

The sale takes two days to set up, said member Pat Serio, who coordinated the sale. “It is the most rewarding of all the events we do.”

The club’s next activity will be American flag-waving Sept. 11 from 9 to 10 a.m. in front of Sun Trust Bank, 21744 State Road 54, and from 5 to 7 p.m. in front of the Old Lutz Schoolhouse, 18819 U.S. Highway 41.

The club’s general meeting is at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 26 at the Land O’Lakes Community Center, 5401 Land O’Lakes Blvd. Visitors are invited and membership applications will be accepted. For information, call (813) 961-7038 or (813) 598-6945.
