A lightning strike apparently sparked a fire Wednesday at an apartment complex near University Mall in north Tampa, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue said.

Crews responded just before noon to the University Club Apartments, 12731 University Club Drive, just west of the University of South Florida.

Flames and smoke were visible from the fire, officials said.

The blaze began in the roof of Unit 12820, which contains eight apartments, Fire Rescue officials said. Firefighters pulled down the ceiling in those apartments to search for additional flames, officials said.

Firefighters were able to extinguish flames from inside and outside the structure.

No injuries were reported.

The American Red Cross was assisting displaced residents.

The county’s Office of Emergency Management was on the scene as well as Code Enforcement.
