TAMPA – You probably haven’t heard of the musical influences of Buchanan and director Sarah Baca.
They aren’t Springsteen, Dylan, or Elvis or any of the usual suspects. They are the teachers, the people who encourage and prod and show kids every part of the music spectrum. She has been teaching at Buchanan Middle School for four years and her students say that they have had their eyes opened to a whole new world of music, not just the Top 40 things they hear on the radio and their iPods.
For Baca, music is a passion she’s had since she started playing flute in fourth grade. She can play nearly every instrument and it isn’t unusual, according to her students, for her to simply pick up an instrument and demonstrate how to make the perfect sound.
She graduated from the University of South Florida and was drum major in the band her final year. She listens to almost every kind of music and makes sure the kids in her band do the same.
“I have had a lot of influences,” Baca said. “I listen to a lot of music, and the thing we have going now is jazz. The kids are enjoying it. I just make sure they get to play something popular and up-to-date at the end of the class. It makes it fun for them.”
