CLEARWATER – No one ever walks away from golf, do they?
Once a golfer, always a golfer. It’s something that gets into the blood and never escapes – generally.
Somehow, Andrew Corry walked away. At least for a little while.
Corry is the head golf professional at Feather Sound Country Club. He teaches, runs the golf operations, and loves every minute of it.
He started playing golf as a kid while growing up in Georgia. His grandfather taught him the game and as his game improved, he progressed. Soon, he was playing American Junior Golf Association golf events, usually pretty successfully. He became a scratch golfer – then decided he needed a break.
“I loved the game,” Corry said. “I just kind of burned out. It was something I had been doing my whole life. I wanted to get away. I was good, but I was just a little tired of golf.”
Walking away from golf for any length of time usually means starting off again, from scratch. For Corry, a return to the game inspired him to make it a career.
“One day I went out to play with some friends after I walked away,” Corry said. “I realized I still had the hang of it and got back into it. I realized I could play this game.”
Corry went on to play some minitour events and got a job as an assistant pro at Feather Sound. He moved on to Innisbrook Golf Resort for a time, then came back to Feather Sound as head professional. It’s a lot of teaching, running the clubhouse, and catering to members. Feather Sound is a private club, so relations with the members is vital. He doesn’t really get the time to play as much as he would like, but that’s the plight of most head golf professionals.
“I try to play about once a week and I am still pretty good,” said Corry, who said he is about a 3 handicap. “I give about 10 lessons a week. I walked away from the game once, but this is a career for me.”
Corry takes his teaching seriously. He works with adults and kids. During his time at Innisbrook he spent plenty of his lessons trying to give quick fixes to tourists who were playing a resort course, often under stressful situations. At Feather Sound, Corry has a teaching philosophy. If he sees a golfer who needs a quick fix, he said he can put a Band-Aid on it, just something quick and easy. But to really get the game down right, he said a package of lessons is the only remedy.
“I can give that Band-Aid, but you have to take lessons. It doesn’t have to be a tough thing, but I can’t make someone better in one day. This is a tough game.”
That comes from someone who knows. He may have walked away once, but he doesn’t plan to ever do it again.
