You Do the Dishes marks 15 years in Tampa Palms

Artist Herb Pinder of New Tampa provides expert instruction for the You Do the Dishes Summer Art Workshops for children ages 7 to 13. Pinder said the program gives children a chance to express their creativity during the lazy days of summer without feeling rushed.

"We introduce them to a wide range of artistic mediums and add the practical application - that's the most important thing," said Pinder, who has been working at the shop for 14 years. "We introduce the child to acrylics, soft pastels, drawings, watercolors, print making and pottery making. They have an opportunity to work in such detail with no time limits and restraints."

Pinder inspires children by sharing pop, folk and local art as well the work of famous architects. Children then create their own versions of the artwork.

He said creative writing, music, dance and art all boost children's self-esteem.

Cynthia Kozlowski of New Tampa, the owner of the pottery studio and coffee bar, said they celebrated the 15th anniversary of You Do the Dishes on April 1.

Over the years she has expanded the menu to include gourmet coffees, teas with honey and steamed milk, blended frozen coffee drinks, smoothies, ice cream and Italian soda.

She said the location was ideal since it's near the University of South Florida as well as apartments and single-family homes in the Tampa Palms area.

"We try to make it a family place to get together," she said. "I make it an extension of my house and I make people feel at home. I have fresh flowers and music. I think that's why people like to come back."

Stephanie Geleta of Tampa Palms said she is a repeat customer at the pottery studio. She spent some mother-daughter bonding time recently with her daughter Madysen, 9, a fifth-grader at Carrollwood Day School.

Madysen, who painted a knickknack for her bedroom, said she attended the summer art program last year.

"I like painting," she said. "I like hats but I thought it would be too hard to paint a hat so I am painting the owl because it's easier."

Stephanie, meanwhile, painted a sponge holder for the kitchen sink.

"It's a great place," Stephanie said. "She went to camp her last year and loved it."

Christine Morrison of South Tampa, an employee, worked with a group of preschoolers participating in a class at the pottery studio.

"I just love it here," Morrison said. "It's relaxing and the kids are great to work with. I love to paint."

The You Do the Dishes Summer Art Workshops take place from June through early August from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Cost is $220 per session including materials. Children bring their own lunches.

They are open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Weekly painting specials include senior discounts on Wednesdays as well as Thursday "college nights."
