In 1979, the Museum of Science and Industry at 4801 E. Fowler Ave. was a shell of a building.

The original supporters of the project envisioned a high-tech building, featuring advance science research and exploration exhibits. It would rely on its predecessor museums and the scientific, technological and industrial growth occurring in Tampa and at the neighboring University of South Florida, according to MOSI’s website.

The complex was completed in 1980 and permanently opened to the public in 1982. MOSI now is home to public programs and exhibits, an IMAX DOME theater and the MOSI Partnership School.
