Internet cafes are not a problem in Temple Terrace, but city leaders aren't taking any chances.

The Temple Terrace City Council has approved a temporary moratorium on the gambling operations in retail outlets.

Tampa, Plant City and Hillsborough County also have moratoriums in effect on the game of internet sweepstakes.

The Temple Terrace City Council voted 5-0 to approve a six-month moratorium scheduled to end in June.

"A temporary moratorium makes a lot of sense," City Attorney Mark Connolly said.

Connolly is hopeful Florida cities will soon receive guidance from the courts soon on how to proceed when a local store or shop wants to operate a simulated gambling device.

Internet cafés can appear overnight. Many Florida cities and counties have banned them.

Temple Terrace leaders said they wanted to take action to torpedo the possibility any such operation would pop up here.
