Freedom girls track and field coach Chris McComb, who last week received a suspension and fine following an incident at the Class 3A-District 10 meet, has been cleared to coach the remainder of the season, Patriots athletic director Eli Thomas said Wednesday.
Thomas said McComb was cleared by Florida High School Athletic Association associate executive director Denarvise Thornton after McComb completed a mandatory online coaching class and paid a fine $150.
Initially, McComb was suspended seven days and two contests, which would have meant he would have missed Thursday's 3A-Region 3 meet in Punta Gorda and next week's state finals.
The incident report said McComb refused to leave the scoring/timing area and used profanity at the 3A-10 meet shortly after the conclusion of the 4x400 relay, an event that saw King's foursome disqualified for failing to cross the finish line with the baton.
As a result of the disqualification, Freedom moved up to fourth place in the 4x400, the final qualifying spot for regionals.
McComb will now be leading a girls team that boasts about a dozen athletes who have qualified in the 100, 800, pole vault and all three relays.
