A St. Petersburg man died early Monday morning when he was struck by a car after walking into its path.

According to police, Rockford James Joseph Connell, 27, crossed from the west side of Fourth Street North around 12:30 a.m., then turned around and crossed the median.

He was struck by a 2011 Chevrolet driven by Robert Pheifer, 51, who was driving southbound.

The impact sent Connell airborne, and he struck a tree in the median, police say.

Connell, who police say may have been impaired at the time of the crash, was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where he later died.
