A 40-year-old man died early Sunday when he crashed his pickup when he and a friend went fishing on Mosaic property.

About 1:30 a.m., two men were fishing illegally on Mosaic property in Bradley Junction when they saw headlights, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. They got into their white Chevrolet pickup and drove away, but crashed trying to drive over a two-foot berm.

The driver, John Thomas III, of 299 West Marshall St. in Eagle Lake, was partially ejected and got trapped underneath the truck, the sheriff’s office said. His passenger, Dennis Pate, 30, of 845 North 9th St. in Eagle Lake, tried to free Thomas but could not, and then ran to get help.

Security from Mosaic found the truck about an hour later, but Thomas had died.

Mosaic security called deputies, one of whom was flagged down by Pate who told the deputy what happened, the sheriff’s office said. Pate said he did not have a cell phone and could not find Thomas’ phone. He returned to the crash scene with the deputy.
