Police: Drunk pedestrian killed in St. Pete

A pedestrian was killed Tuesday night after police said he stepped into the roadway outside the crosswalk.

Police say the unidentified pedestrian, believed to be a transient who had an extremely high blood alcohol content, just left the Checker’s restaurant on 66th Street around 8:30 p.m. and attempted to cross near 38th Avenue when he was struck by a 2003 BMW driven by 28-year-old Ramiz Suljic, of St. Petersburg.

The pedestrian — who was wearing dark clothing — walked westbound on 66th Street and into the path of Suljic, who police say attempted to swerve out of the way.

The pedestrian was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where he later died, police say.

Police say Suljic was not impaired at the time of the crash, and he is not facing charges.
