A Gary Adult High School student is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle Wednesday afternoon at Hillsborough Avenue and 40th Street, the Tampa Police Department said.

William Hogan, 18, was taken to Tampa General Hospital after the crash.

The student and his friend were running north on 40th Street trying to cross Hillsborough Avenue when he was struck by a vehicle a few feet outside the crosswalk. The student and his friend tried to cross with a red light and a pedestrian sign saying “don’t cross,” police said.

After the crash, the driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and cooperated with police.

The crash appears to be an accident, and no charges are pending against the driver, police said.

Witnesses at the scene have said multiple vehicles struck the victim, but police can’t find evidence that the victim was hit by more than one car, police said.

Investigators will download video from the red light camera at the intersection to assist in the investigation, police said.
