Lakeland man struck by truck, dies

A 58-year-old man was killed this morning when he was struck by a tractor-trailer while walking on a road in Lakeland.

About 5 a.m., William J. House, 44, of 1327 Covey Circle North in Lakeland, was westbound on Pipkin Road West in a 2005 International when he felt the truck strike something, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. House found he had hit a pedestrian and called 911.

Thomas Edward Brown, of 6650 New Tampa Hwy., Lot 33 in Lakeland, died after the accident, according to the sheriff’s office. Brown was wearing dark clothing and walking in the roadway, with his back to traffic in an unlit area.

According to family members, this is the second time he has been struck by a vehicle while walking in the roadway, the sheriff’s office said.

No charges are pending, the sheriff’s office said.
