Two drivers have been identified as those involved in a crash that left a Thonotosassa dead man on Fowler Avenue after being ejected from his car early Saturday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Amari Williams, 30, was westbound in a 1985 Chevrolet Camaro, just east of Interstate 75, when he passed and then collided with a 1997 GMC pickup truck around 3:15 a.m., troopers said. The collision caused the Camaro to overturn and Williams was ejected from the vehicle onto the road, troopers said.
The driver of the pickup, Michael P. Mercer, 41, of Wesley Chapel, then fled the scene, FHP said. His vehicle was found abandoned off of Fletcher Avenue.
As two passers-by from Jacksonville stopped to help Williams, two more vehicles struck him and those drivers also fled the scene. Williams died at the scene.
William S. Ridley, 47 of Tampa, contacted the highway patrol and has been identified as the third one to strike Williams, FHP said.
The driver of the fourth vehicle remains unidentified.
The highway patrol is asking any witnesses to accident to call the agency at (813) 631-4020.
Charges are pending in the case.
