A Plant City man was killed Thursday night when deputies say he ran a red light and struck another car in a Lakeland intersection.

According to deputies, Howard D. McKinley was riding westbound on New Tampa Highway around 7 p.m. when he ran a red light and entered the intersection of Clark Road, where he tried to lay down the motorcycle to avoid hitting a 2011 Hyundai Sonata driven by Heidi L. Carmichael, of Lakeland.

Deputies say McKinley was ejected from the motorcycle as it clipped the left rear bumper of the Sonata as it slid on its side.

McKinley, who deputies say did not appear to be wearing a helmet, was transported to Lakeland Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Carmichael was not injured, deputies say.
