A 16-year-old Tampa boy was killed Monday night when the bicycle he was riding was hit by a truck on Gunn Highway, Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputies said.

Anthony Greene, of 2222 E. Emma St., had been a student at Middleton High since December, a Hillsborough County schools spokeswoman said. A crisis team was called to the school Tuesday to assist anyone in coping with the teen’s death, she said.

He was riding his black bicycle south on Gunn at Jana Drive at 8:30 p.m., deputies said.

The 2002 Dodge truck, driven by 18-year-old Christopher Garrett Griffith, was also going south about 45 mph, deputies said.

Griffith, of 5612 Tern Court, Tampa, observed the bicycle and attempted to take evasive action, deputies said. However, he could not avoid the bike, and the teen was hit and pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said.

The bike was about 2 feet east of the west fog line on Gunn when the collision occurred, deputies said. There is no bike lane or paved shoulder on the road in the area of the crash.
