A 15-year-old boy is in stable condition after he and his friend were fooling around with a gun today and it went off, injuring the boy, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.
The boy and his friend, also a 15-year-old boy, were on Alhambra Crest Drive in Ruskin handling a small caliber semi-automatic handgun at around 5:15 p.m. One of the boys was holding the gun when it went off and the bullet struck the victim on the side of his upper body, the sheriff's office said.
It isn't clear who was holding the gun at the time it went off, the sheriff's office said. Investigators have found the gun and are continuing to investigate the case.
The shooting is being considered accidental and charges aren't anticipated, the sheriff's office said.
An emergency helicopter transported the boy, whose name hasn't been released, to a local hospital after the shooting, the sheriff's office said.
