A pedestrian died after he was hit by a tractor-trailer while he was walking on Interstate 4 in Brandon on Wednesday afternoon, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Randy Allen Tempfer, 50, of Seffner, died at Tampa General Hospital, where he was taken after being struck, the highway patrol said.

According to troopers, about 2:45 p.m., Tempfer was walking on the south shoulder of eastbound I-4 west of the Kingsway Road overpass when for unknown reasons he stepped into the outside lane and into the path of a 2012 Peterbilt semitrailer driven by Thomas Alan Coleson, 43, of Jackson Springs, N.C.

Coleson was not injured, and no charges have been filed. An investigation is still under way.

The truck was operated by Masey Auto Transport of Ocoee, the patrol said.

The crash closed one lane of traffic for about two hours, the highway patrol said.
