An aunt who also was the caregiver of an infant has been charged in the child's death in May, the Sarasota Police Department said.

Carmen Martinez, 55, 1320 Boulevard of the Arts, was arrested Wednesday and charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child.

On May 14, police responded to reports of a woman yelling for help on the third floor of the McCown Towers, 1320 Boulevard of the Arts.

Officers found 8-month-old Alivia Ortega unconscious, without a pulse. One of the officers performed CPR on her until the fire department arrived.

Her pulse was restored and the infant was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, police said. Ortega was flown to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg for additional critical care.

Ortega died May 15 and the Medical Examiner's Office determined her death was caused by internal injuries, police said.

Police request that anyone with additional information contact Detective Megan Buck at (941) 954-7067.
