A man has been sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of sexual battery on a girl, the Sarasota Police Department said.
Melquiades Lopez-Tovar, 43, was convicted Wednesday of sexual battery on a person under 12 years of age and of lewd and lascivious molestation on a person under 12 years of age.
He was arrested June 9, 2011, on charges of sexually battering two children. The crimes occurred about 10 years ago, when the female victim was 10-11 years old and the male victim was 6-7 years old, police said.
Lopez-Tovar had been dating the victims' mother, and the incidents occurred when the mother had left the victims' in his care, police said.
After his conviction, Lopez-Tovar was sentenced to life on the sexual battery charge and 30 years on the lewd and lascivious molestation charge.
