Tampa’s last cigar factory pleads for help against new federal rules

Published:   |   Updated: July 2, 2014 at 09:51 AM

Tampa once had more than 150 cigar factories; today, only one remains.

The J.C. Newman Cigar Co. recently put up this banner at its El Reloj cigar factory in Ybor City asking for public support of less federal regulation on fine cigars.

The Food and Drug Administration is proposing to exempt from future regulation “premium cigars,” which it defines as hand-rolled, all-tobacco cigars that cost $10 or more each.

Many Newman cigars cost less than that.
