The Tampa Police Department has opened a homicide investigation into the Monday night death of a 1-year-old boy.
Jayden Luis Sarria died at St. Joseph's Hospital, said Andrea Davis, a Tampa police spokeswoman. The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner's Office hasn't completed the autopsy and hasn't ruled on a cause of death.
Davis said the boy was taken to the hospital on Sept. 27 but wouldn't release additional information on the case.
"It's a very active investigation," Davis said.
The boy had lived in Tampa with his mother, Anjenette Lopez. He has three siblings who have been removed from her custody and placed in foster care, said Terry Field, a spokesman for the Department of Children and Families.
In July, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Child Protective Investigation Unit investigated a case involving Jayden. The case was closed and ruled not substantiated, meaning investigators couldn't verify if the child had been abused, Field said. DCF has a contract with the sheriff's office to investigate child abuse cases.
When Jayden was taken to the hospital on Sept. 27, the sheriff's office opened another case, which remains under investigation, said Larry McKinnon, a sheriff's office spokesman.
Patricia Agosto-Calderon, the paternal grandmother to Lopez's oldest son, described Jayden as a happy child.
"The baby was the best baby I'd ever seen," said Agosto-Calderon, 50, of Brooksville. "He hardly cried. He used to laugh a lot."
She said her grandson was close to Jayden. He would help prepare the bottle for his little brother and change his diapers, she said.
She worries about how her grandson will be affected once he learns about his brother's death.
