An elderly man attempting to cross 54th Avenue North was hit by a car and died this morning in St. Petersburg.

A 2001 Ford F-350 pickup driven by Jon M. Smith, 59, of St. Petersburg, was attempting to pass the 2008 Saturn SUV driven by Maria Bekala, 50, of St. Petersburg, while Bekala was stopped at the intersection of 54th Avenue North and 81{+s}{+t} Street North around 4:10 a.m., police said.

That's when police say Myles Bernard Gillis, 80, of St. Petersburg, was struck by Smith's pickup in the crosswalk.

Gillis was taken to Bayfront Medical Center where he died from his injuries.
