I am somewhat dismayed to read the negative array of anti-Democratic comments in Monday's Tampa Tribune (Your Views, "Democrats at a Crossroads," Dick Artz; "Opposes 'new' party," Gordon T Brown; "Smoke and mirrors," John Osterweil.
If the charges they make against the Democratic Party were true, I would be less dismayed and I would try to improve the party. But some of them — and all of them in the case of Gordon Brown — are simply invalid. Brown's letter is written as if he were reciting facts: The Democratic Party "has abandoned the traditions of Kennedy and Truman," "has become the party of the welfare state," "is the party of class envy," "has replaced the concept of individual responsibility with the promise of government entitlements, "makes every effort to spend its way into prosperity while trying to borrow its way out of debt" and "has turned its back on traditional values."
As the chair of the platform committee of the Hillsborough County Democratic Party, I urge the Tribune to present its readers the facts. Our Democratic Party principles are at: http://www.hillsboroughcountydemocrats.org/pdf/PlatformPrinciples2011.pdf
