A Nokomis man has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for possession of child pornography, according to a release from U.S. Attorney Robert E. O'Neill of the Middle District of Florida.

District Judge Richard A. Lazzara last week sentenced John Anderson Shinault, 59, who also was ordered to register as a sex offender and serve a lifetime of supervised release.  Shinault pleaded guilty June 22.

Shinault used a peer-to-peer program to receive and distribute child pornography over the Internet, according to court documents.  On Aug. 24, 2011, an FBI task force officer downloaded files of child pornography from an Internet Protocol address that was traced to Shinault's residence.  On Oct. 4, 2011, FBI agents seized two computers and a hard drive from his residence.

An inspection of the items found 3,600 images and 14 videos of child pornography, the release said.

Shinault, at that time, was a registered sex offender following a 1998 Texas conviction for injury to a child younger than 15 years of age, the release said.  In 1988, he was convicted and court-martialed by the Navy for indecent liberties with a child.
