TAMPA - Hillsborough County aviation officials want to rename Vandenberg Airport, near the intersection of interstates 4 and 75, to Tampa Executive Airport and name the terminal for the airport's founder, George Vandenberghe.Staff

The name change would eliminate confusion with aviation listings of Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., and better describe the use of the local airport, said Louis Miller, director of Tampa International Airport and the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority's three general aviation airports.
General aviation airports in Orlando, Fort Lauderdale and elsewhere are named "Executive Airport" to reflect their business and general aviation traffic.
Airport officials will seek community input before moving forward with the plan.
Vandenberg Airport, about a 15 minute drive east of downtown, serves small jet and light aircraft traffic. The aviation authority acquired the airport in 1985.
George Vandenberghe previously had changed the name to Vandenberg Airport, also apparently in an effort to reduce confusion over the lengthy name.
