A 73-year-old school bus driver was cited for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle after being involved in a crash this afternoon in Manatee County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

About 3 p.m., James B. McKinney of Bradenton was driving a school bus with 47 students on board southbound on Rye Road approaching the intersection with 18th Place East, FHP said.

At the same time, a fire truck driven by Douglas R. Spriggs, 48, of St. Petersburg was southbound on Rye, FHP said. The truck was responding to a vehicle fire and had its emergency lights and siren activated.

McKinney didn't see or hear the fire truck and attempted to turn left onto 18th Place East, striking the side of the fire truck, FHP said.

Two passengers on the bus were taken to Lakewood Ranch Hospital with minor injuries. Neither driver was injured.
