A man spotted surfing child porn websites on a sidewalk was arrested this morning in Tampa, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

At 9:30 a.m., a shopper saw Benjamin Ashauer, 39, 5470 E. Busch Blvd., viewing child porn on a laptop while sitting outside the Terrace Collections strip mall, 4941 E. Busch Blvd., deputies said.

Plain clothes detectives with the Internet Predator Unit went to the location and found Ashauer still viewing images of small children posing erotically. He was using free Wi-Fi connections from the mall's businesses to access the Internet, deputies said.

Detectives contacted Ashauer and got permission to examine his computer. As a result, detectives found graphic files depicting children from infant to approximately 12 years old engaged in sexual activity, deputies said.

Ashauer was arrested on 50 counts of possession of child pornography and booked into the Hillsborough County Jail with bail set at $375,000 bail.

The investigation is continuing.
