Irish toddler recovers from blood infection in Fort Myers

Published:

A toddler from Ireland is recovering in Fort Myers from a near-fatal infection that sent her temperature spiking and caused a fast-spreading rash.

On Wednesday, doctors at the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida in Fort Myers said 2-year-old Katie Vernon was infection-free after 16 days of treatment.

The News-Press of Fort Myers reports the child had a blood infection known as meningococcemia.

Doctors say she likely contracted the infection in Ireland. They say bringing her to the hospital quickly likely saved her life. She was in critical condition when she arrived at the hospital and was given large doses of fluids and three kinds of medicine to decrease her blood pressure and improve the pumping of her heart.

The Vernons, who live in Dublin, were vacationing in Cape Coral.
