Huge Tampa house fire out; no one hurt

A fire sent flames towering through the roof of an unoccupied home Thursday morning in the Egypt Lake area of Tampa.

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue responded to the “large residential structure fire” about 6:30 a.m. at 3218 Alene St., just west of Sligh Avenue and north of Lambright Street.

Flames engulfed the house, rising at least 20 feet. It took about an hour to extinguish the blaze.

There were no reports of injuries.

Because of the flames, emergency personnel could not do a check of the interior, but there did not appear to be anyone inside, Fire Rescue spokeswoman Jessica Damico said.

A relative of the homeowner had been living there but reportedly was out of town, Damico said.

She did not know if any pets were in the home.

The approximately 3,500-square-foot house was deemed a total loss, officials said.

Fire investigators were on the scene to determine a cause, Damico said.

West Sligh Avenue was closed to traffic between Minnehaha and Lambright streets due to the fire rescue activity, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said. Motorists were asked to use North Glenn Avenue or another route.
