Paul J. Vanderploog, director of Hillsborough County's Public Utilities Department and a 14-year county employee, will retire May 25, according to a memorandum from County Administrator Mike Merrill's office.
Vanderploog, a former U.S. Army major general, led the reorganization that joined Water Resources with Solid Waste to create a unified department.
"Paul leaves us with a long list of major accomplishments that includes many major initiatives, numerous operational improvements and efficiencies and increased productivity," Merrill wrote.
Merrill appointed county Public Works Director John Lyons to take over Vanderploog's position with utilities. In Public Works, Mike Williams will lead the engineering and environmental sections, and Robert Suess will manage operational and field units.
