BRANDON -

With a new director at the helm, Hillsborough County Animal Services is expanding its hours in an effort to increase adoption and registration rates and lower the shelter's euthanasia rate.

Beginning Nov. 1, the animal services shelter at 440 N. Falkenburg Road will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week.

The new hours will give Hillsborough County residents added opportunities to come in and register their pets, expedite vouchers for spaying or neutering pets, become foster parents for animals or volunteer at the shelter, said department spokeswoman Marti Ryan.

The new hours will kick off with a festive "yappy hour" from 5 to 7 p.m. with refreshments and meet-and-greets with animals living at the shelter.

The shelter also is looking for new volunteers, who must be at least 16, and will hold an orientation at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 14.

While most government offices will be closed for the Veterans Day holiday, Hillsborough County Animal Services will offer special holiday hours Nov. 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Animal Services will offer half-priced pet adoptions to all active or retired members of the military.

Hours for animal turn-ins and strays will not be extended as part of the shelter's modified schedule. To learn about these services, check the website at www.hillsboroughcounty.org, then click on Animal Services.
