The Hillsborough County Health Department has issued an advisory for three beaches today after testing revealed excessive levels of enterococci bacteria.
The advisory for Bahia, Ben T. Davis, and Picnic Island Park beaches will remain in effect until re-sampling indicates the water is within the satisfactory range, health officials say. The beaches will be retested Monday.
Enterococci normally inhabits the intestinal tract of humans and animals, and cause disease, infections, or rashes. The presence of enteric bacteria is an indication of fecal pollution, which may come from storm water runoff, pets and wildlife, and human sewage, health officials say.
