Fundraiser set for injured Weeki Wachee mermaid

BROOKSVILLE - A fundraiser will be held Thursday at Texas Roadhouse Grill for Weeki Wachee Springs mermaid, Samantha Maywell, 24, who fell off a pontoon boat near Hernando Beach Aug. 22 and nearly severed her leg in the propeller.

Doctors were able to save Maywell’s leg, and the mermaid had surgery last week to clean her leg and reattach tendons.

“From what I understand it’s gone pretty successful,” said John Anthanson, marketing and public relations manager for the park.

The fundraiser planned for Maywell, who has a young daughter and many medical bills, will be held Sept. 5 from 3-10 p.m. at Texas Roadhouse Grill on State Road 50 by the Beacon Theatre.

“Texas Roadhouse is gracious enough to donate 10 percent of the bill if you mention Mermaid Samantha, and we’re also bringing four mermaids in tails,” Anthanson said, adding that the mermaids will be there from 6-7 p.m.
