A bank robbery suspect, who was scheduled Thursday to accept a plea agreement in another robbery, was arrested after a standoff at his home tonight, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office said today.
Deputies responding to the 2:31 p.m. robbery call at Bank of America, 6525 South Tamiami Trail, identified John Samuel Gay, 57, as the suspect.
Deputies learned Gay had returned to his apartment in the 6300 block of Gateway Avenue. A perimeter was established, but Gay refused to come out of his home, deputies said.
The SWAT team made numerous attempts to establish communication with him, but around 8:00 p.m. officers breached a window of the home and Gay surrendered, the sheriff's office said.
Gay will be charged with armed robbery and booked into the Sarasota County Jail.
He was scheduled to appear in court Thursday to accept a plea agreement in a Venice robbery case in which he would be sentenced to five years in prison, deputies said.
