Parade of costumed dogs starts holiday in Key West

KEY WEST – About 200 canines have paraded in the Key West Dachshund Walk that precedes four quirky “drops” to ring in 2014.

Some dogs Tuesday were costumed as wieners in buns, superheroes, sea creatures and even a sword-carrying pirate. A dachshund from Philadelphia came as a “cocktail wiener” in a pseudo martini glass.

Thousands of human revelers are expected in the island’s historic district for four nighttime takeoffs on New York City’s ball drop.

Celebrants can watch female impersonator Sushi “drop” in a large red high heel shoe. Or they can view a huge man-made conch shell, a Florida Keys icon, descend outside Sloppy Joe’s Bar. A replica Key lime wedge splashing into a six-foot margarita glass and a pirate wench “drop” from atop a sailing vessel’s mast round out the offerings.
