MIAMI (AP) — A national education organization has named the head of Miami-Dade Public Schools superintendent of the year.
The School Superintendents Association awarded the honor to Alberto Carvalho at its annual conference in Nashville on Thursday.
Carvalho was one of four finalists for the award. He was selected on evaluation of his leadership, communication, professionalism and community involvement.
In a statement, Carvalho said the recognition reflects the dedication and sacrifice of many in the district, and that he is sharing the award with teachers, students and others in the community.
Carvalho came to the U.S. as an immigrant from Portugal when he was a teen. He has been superintendent of Miami-Dade Public Schools since 2008.
