TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A federal jury has awarded $975,000 to the estate of a woman who died in a Pinellas County Jail cell.
The jury made its decision on Friday in the case of 50-year-old Jennifer DeGraw.
Attorneys say the jail's detention deputies and medical staff failed to properly look after DeGraw, who was suffering from mental illness when she was booked into the facility on March 16, 2009. She was found unresponsive in the cell eight days later.
A civil complaint says jail staff signed jail records to show they checked on her when video showed they had not.
She was taken to jail after her husband called police, saying she hadn't taken her medicine and was acting out. She resisted and was charged with battery on an officer.
