MIAMI (AP) — The Coast Guard says five fishermen aboard a disabled vessel seen drifting in the waters off northern Haiti are now safe.
A Coast Guard statement says officials were notified that the vessel had been found in the area of Canal de Tortue in Haiti earlier in the weekend. Officials also said there were five Haitian fishermen on the boat, not nine as initially reported. All are safe and in no immediate distress.
Officials launched a search for the fishermen after their small vessel called the Aisha became disabled and started drifting Friday in the waters off Labadee.
According to the Coast Guard, the fishing vessel originated in the Turks & Caicos Islands and started drifting just as it arrived at its destination in north Haiti before the fishermen could disembark.
