MIAMI (AP) — Animal adoption fees will be waived this weekend in Miami-Dade County due to an overcrowded shelter.
The county's Animal Services Department said in a statement that almost 500 homeless and abandoned pets entered the shelter this past week alone. With the overcrowded conditions in the shelter during the summer months, the department is waiving all adoption fees for pets over four months of age and half off for pets less than that. The offer ends on Sunday.
Kathy Labrada is the chief of shelter operations and enforcement. She says that choosing to adopt one of the hundreds of shelter pets can help save a life.
According to the department statement, over 27,000 pets are abandoned each year at the shelter.
