FACE-CHEWING VICTIM CONTINUES RECOVERY IN MIAMI
A homeless man whose face was mostly chewed off in a bizarre attack last year appeared Tuesday to be mostly at peace with his disfigurement, strumming a guitar, making jokes and thanking people for their donations to help pay for his care. Ronald Poppo doesn't like to leave his hospital room, though, and he won't allow anyone to visit him, other than his doctors and nurses. "My face," he says.
SUSPECT IN FAMU HAZING DEATH FILES WRITTEN PLEA
The attorney for the last of the suspects charged in the death of a Florida A&M University drum major during a hazing ritual said his client didn't have to appear for an arraignment Tuesday because he'd already entered a written not guilty plea. Darryl Cearnel was charged with manslaughter and felony hazing in March, becoming the 14th former FAMU band member charged in Robert Champion's November 2011 death.
STATE SUPREME COURT SAYS EXECUTION CAN GO FORWARD
The Florida Supreme Court says the execution of a man who killed a prison guard in 1987 can go forward on June 12. William Van Poyck and Frank Valdes ambushed two guards who were taking inmate James O'Brien in a prison van to a doctor's office in West Palm Beach. Officer Fred Griffis died.
CIVIL RIGHTS LAWSUIT FILED IN FATAL URBAN BEACH WEEK SHOOTING
The family of a 22-year-old man killed in a barrage of police gunfire during the 2011 Urban Beach Week in Miami Beach is filing a civil rights and negligence lawsuit. They're seeking damages for his death. The family believes the shooting of Raymond Herisse was unjustified.
COURT REJECTS APPEAL OF FLORIDA MASS KILLER FERGUSON
A federal appeals court has rejected claims by convicted Florida killer John Errol Ferguson that he should not be executed because he is mentally incompetent. The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday that although Ferguson suffers from mental illness, he has a rational understanding of what he did and why he is scheduled for execution.
