10-mile yellow streak on I-4 has state stumped

It’s possible no one ever will know who’s responsible for a trail of yellow paint that stretches for 10 miles on Interstate 4.

One thing’s for sure: It’s one big mess.

A road striping truck probably left the yellow streak down the middle of eastbound travel lanes from 50th Street in Tampa to Branch Forbes Road in Plant City.

State officials don’t know who or what to blame because no one has owned up to spilling the paint, Florida Department of Transportation spokeswoman Kris Carson said.

An agency director of operations first noticed the spilled paint on May 6.

The state’s maintenance experts have decided not to try hiding the yellow paint with a coat of black, Carson said. The streak might annoy some drivers, but it’s no safety hazard.
