A three-alarm fire Monday at the Howard Johnson hotel in downtown Tampa - which forced a guest evacuation - was caused by a problem with an air conditioner, according to Tampa Fire Rescue.
Rescue units were called late Monday morning to the hotel at 111 W. Fortune St., adjacent to the Straz performing arts center, where they found a fire on the 12th floor, which was under renovation and unoccupied.
Tampa Fire Rescue said only 53 of the hotel's 332 rooms were occupied at the time of the fire.
There were no reports of injuries. Early estimates put expected damages at $90,000.
