Fire burns scooter shop at La Teresita plaza

Welding near a fuel tank sparked a fire Friday afternoon inside a scooter shop at La Teresita plaza in West Tampa.

Firefighters were called at 12:20 p.m. and arrived two minutes later to the Bayside Scooter, 3304-A W. Columbus Drive. The fire was under control within 30 minutes, Tampa Fire Rescue said.

The fire started in a rear work area, where a worker using welding equipment on a scooter ignited its gasoline tank, according to Tampa Fire Rescue. The fire intensified and spread to several other scooters.

Fire damage was confined to Bayside Scooter, but neighboring Alberto’s Barber Styling sustained smoke damage, firefighters said. The was no damage reported at La Teresita Grocery in the shopper center.

There was also no apparent damage to the landmark La Teresita restaurant nearby.

About 60 firefighters were called to the scene.
