Jose Sanchez-Flores has a new car to go with his new diploma.

The recent graduate of Strawberry Crest High School in Dover won a 2014 Scion XB when he drew the winning key at the annual new car giveaway for Hillsborough students with perfect attendance, a spokesperson for Hillsborough County Public Schools said

Sanchez-Flores, 19, who heads to Hillsborough Community College in the fall, was the 10th name drawn by Hillsborough School Superintendent MaryEllen Elia.

More than 350 recently graduated students who had perfect attendance for either the first or second semester of their senior year attended the event at Toyota of Tampa Bay on Fletcher Avenue. Each was hoping to pick one of 10 keys from a fishbowl and see if that key opened the door to the Scion.

Sanchez-Flores, who came to the United States from El Salvador in 2009, said he has never owned a car. Speaking while surrounded by television cameras, he said the last time he missed a day of school was more than two years ago, a news release said.

The event, sponsored by Toyota of Tampa Bay, was an incentive for students to attend school.
