School board approves dozens of administrator appointments, transfers

Published:

TAMPA – As the Hillsborough County school district starts its spring semester, more than 40 administrators are gearing up to start new jobs.

The school board today approved the appointments of five new principals, as well as the transfers of 34 assistant principals and three district-level administrators.

Chief Facilities Officer Cathy Valdes was promoted to deputy superintendent, a post being vacated by Dan Valdez, who is retiring Jan. 31. Valdes will officially take over Feb. 3. Valdez made $159,754 per year in the post.

Valdes has worked with the school district since 1972, when she was hired to teach at Thonotosassa Elementary School. She moved up the ranks in district schools to primary specialist, curriculum specialist, assistant principal, principal and general area director before becoming the district’s chief facilities officer in 2005.

Freedom High School is also getting a new principal, Sharon Morris, who is currently a principal on special assignment in the district’s administration division.

The New Tampa school’s former principal, David Sheppard, resigned on Oct. 24, about a month after a woman he had previously supervised at Wharton High School had been charged with harassing and stalking him for nearly two years. Sheppard is now a teacher at Gaither High School.
