More than 1,500 applicants will be interviewed over the next two days for about 800 available teaching positions in Hillsborough County.

The interviews are being conducted at Jefferson High School, 4401 W. Cypress St. in Tampa.

Only applicants who submitted a registration form by the deadline and who received an online confirmation outlining the details will be interviewed. However, interested applicants who missed the opportunity to schedule an interview with a school administrator will be interviewed by district-level subject area and department supervisors.

School officials say the Renaissance Expo job fair is for teachers interested in working at one of the district's 43 schools where there is a high concentration of students who qualify for free or reduced lunches.

James Goode, supervisor of teacher recruitment, says there is a high demand for teachers in elementary education, math, sciences, English and exceptional student education.

He said the No. 1 requirement he is seeking from the applicants is passion.

"This is not a job, it's truly a vocation," Goode said. "Teachers have to want to teach. It's gotta be in your head and it has to be in your heart."

While this is just an interview process, officials say some candidates may receive offers at the fair and can complete the hiring process the same day.

Grades 6 through 12: 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday
