Jacob Rice was just 10 when he founded the charity Shoe Giver of Tampa.
As the former Berkeley Preparatory School student prepares to start college this fall, he counts 1,500 pairs given away: 800 locally and 700 internationally.
Homeless children at Metropolitan Ministries, many of whom start school Aug. 19, were the beneficiaries Wednesday.
Shoe Giver operates with money and shoes donated by individuals, manufacturers and suppliers.
Rice said he believes new shoes give children more pride, comfort and confidence.
