HCC to offer classes at Steinbrenner

— Starting this fall, Steinbrenner High School students won’t have to leave the Lutz campus to attend college-level courses through dual enrollment.

Hillsborough Community College will offer evening classes at Steinbrenner for students there, as well as other high school students and adults who live in the northern part of the county.

The high school will be a satellite location for the college, which serves 46,000 students on five campuses across the southern and eastern portions of Hillsborough County and at three learning centers and other satellite campuses.

The school’s campuses are in Brandon, Plant City, Ruskin, Ybor City and on Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa.

About a year ago, HCC President Ken Atwater and Hillsborough Schools Superintendent MaryEllen Elia began talking about ways to offer dual-enrollment classes to students in northern Hillsborough.

Anyone who lives in that area has to travel 20 or more miles to get to a campus.

“Unlike those who go to Robinson, Plant or Hillsborough and can drive over here in minutes for an afternoon class, those opportunities weren’t as available for students up there,” said Jim Wysong, HCC dean of math and sciences, who works at the Dale Mabry campus.” We feel there’s an underserved group there.”

Beginning Aug. 21, HCC professors will teach general education classes such as college algebra, English composition, philosophy and speech in Steinbrenner classrooms. There’s room for 25 students in each class, which are tuition-free for dual-enrollment high school students.

“Our evening class offerings at Steinbrenner High School are an example of our strong partnership with Hillsborough County Public Schools to expand access to higher education,” Atwater said in a news release.

More classes will be added each semester, Wysong said. He couldn’t say whether the college will add its own campus in that part of the county.

“This is kind of an experiment,” he said. “By next fall, we think we’ll be significantly larger in our presence. There’s a fairly large population in the area who have an interest in taking classes.”

The deadline for new students, as well as dual-enrollment students, to sign up for evening classes at Steinbrenner is Aug. 7. To apply, visit www.hc cfl.edu/steinbrenner .aspx. Students already registered at HCC can sign up through the first week of classes. ekourkounis@tampatrib.com
