A bigger Veterans Expressway is one step closer to reality.
The state Department of Transportation has announced that the $172 million widening of the toll road from four to eight lanes will begin construction as soon as the summer of next year.
The project, which should be completed in 2015, will widen the Veterans from Memorial Highway to Gunn Highway.
It will also include the replacement of the Anderson Road toll plaza and realignment of the Anderson Road ramps to get rid of congestion.
The widening will coincide with a project to convert the 14 miles of highway into an all-electronic toll process.
More than 170,000 vehicles a day use the toll road, with most of those going south in the morning and north in the afternoon. About 73 percent of those vehicles already use electronic tolling.
